Tour de Cure

I am riding because the American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure is so much more than a cycling event to me. It is my opportunity to change the future and make a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by diabetes.

I am committed to ride and raise money in this inspirational event not because 26 million people in the United States have diabetes, but because I personally know some of them, and I want to do something about it. Won’t you help me start a chain reaction?

Chances are, you also know someone who has been affected by diabetes and you already know how important it is to stop this disease. By making a donation on my behalf or by joining my team, you will be helping the Association provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.

With your help, we will fight for a future where a parent does not have to hear that their child has diabetes. A future where an adult does not have to face the uncertain times ahead after receiving a diabetes diagnosis. A future where you and I will know that we had a part in making this possible.

I truly appreciate your support. Together we can Stop Diabetes!http://main.diabetes.org/goto/destinationtraining

Blended Learning:The Flex Model

Blended Learning: The Flex Model

Interventions and supplementations for classrooms that use the flex model for blended learning.

The flex model is a program in which content and instruction are delivered primarily by the Internet, where students move on an individually customized fluid schedule among learning modalities and the teacher-of-record is on-site (Staker & Horn, 2012). There are school districts that use the flex model for credit recovery, alternative education and base school courses. The question that comes up in my research, on blended learning, focuses on the type of program that can be adapted to a blend of online instruction and face-to-face instruction. I decided to examine the Apex learning program that incorporates many scaffolds within its format.

Before you start the construction of a blended course, the following key questions should be asked before you begin the process.

·        Are the students reading the content material?

·        Are the students viewing the video content along with the key terms and study guides?

·        Are you requiring the students to complete all sub sections of each unit?

·        Are you requiring the students to take notes for each unit?

Based on my experience I have found that a few students race through the content material, avoid the video scaffold and will not take any notes. With this situation, it is very difficult to force a few students to complete work that is not required by the other students in the class. The other problem that occurs is that some students will be two units ahead in the subject area which means the group will be at different stages within that subject. Now let’s throw another monkey wrench into the picture. Visualize a class that has 3 to 4 different science classes within the period. Can you construct a plan of action?

Plan of Action for Blending

·        The students should take the diagnostic test before the unit is started.

The diagnostic test informs the teacher and the student the exact content area that needs remediation. The diagnostic lists the individual student’s content knowledge, along with a group analysis that gives the percentages of the correct answers by question and responses. This is an excellent tool for developing an effective plan.

·        The teacher should instruct the student to begin the unit that corresponds to the diagnostic test.

·        Use technology resources that will help the student with the vocabulary, equations and complex process that were missed in the diagnostic test.

Based on previous experience, I will use tools such as power point presentations, video segments from Discovery Education or the student will complete the study guide from that sub unit. The students make their own power point presentations using the concepts that were not fully understood in the diagnostic test.

·        The teacher shouldn’t let the student re-take the sub unit quizzes after their first failing grade.

·        You can project the students quiz on the white board, and go over the test on a one to one basis. The other students should be facing their computers and working on their Apex unit.

By the time the student completes fifty percent of the unit, the teacher should decide if the student comprehends the material. Using a video segment is a method that works well with visual learners.

·        Select a video segment that pertains to the specific concept that was identified in the diagnostic test.

·        Do not use a video segment that is longer than eight minutes.

·        Make sure the student has a head set that works with the computer audio.

·        You can create a file for the student and save the video for review.

Individualized Blended Learning

The flex model can be used as an individual format for classes that have several subjects within the class period. Classes with the same subject can utilize group rotations that address content areas that need remediation for three or more students within the targeted area.

In my opinion, it is very important to combine the flex model with a blended program that targets content knowledge. The tools within the apex program compliment the procedures that I have stated in the previous paragraphs. These procedures create the information that can be used as a personalized student portfolio that can kept as an electronic file for future reference.

·        Each student should have a portfolio that contains the apex assessments, video files and power point presentations that were developed by the student.

·        Each student should be able to access their file for test reviews.

·        The teacher can add to the blended portfolios for future students.

I would never go to students house and tutor them. I don't care if there parents are there in the house, or that I have the opportunity to bring an escort (witness) that verifies what is said and done during the tutoring session. We are not in Kansas any more. In today's world it becomes a  litigious nightmare in classroom  and any other place that involves students at any age. Thank goodness we have technology that can be used to instruct students online using formats that are similar to skype.

Training is Tutoring

You name, it and you can find a training program for business, sports, health, and education. There are millions of programs online that address your training needs. They can cost you a small pittance or a lot of money in monthly payments. It difficult to select a program that will address your needs because many introduction promos won't tell you the complete content of the program. So you become confused about the program and the amount of money you are going to spend.

Customize your program

Customize? Who does this? Tutoring and training companies push you in a direction that they want you to go. Why? It is easier to have preset programs than it is to design a customized training program that instructs the client in  the areas o their interest or needs.

I need your help

I am doing research about customized training programs. Would you be willing to answer a few survey questions?

Get Online

Lately, I have been getting quite a few emails from teachers who want to learn how to create an online course. The problem with the term “online course” is that the phrase can mean many things to many people. Therefore, it is very frustrating when you are trying to identify a plan of action for client that wants to develop a course, or wants advice on how to manage the course they are currently using. Where do you start?
The following is the homework assignment that can help future teachers with online courses.
1.       Examine other virtual online course sites and take notice to the program they are using.
2.       Determine if their clients are private, public or higher education schools.
3.       Locate their type of curriculum and how it is used for the students and the teachers.
4.       Decide if you could learn how to use their learning format.
Developing Content
If you feel that developing content for a course is your game, then I would suggest that you sign up for Coursesites.com. You can add five free courses that can have twenty five students per class. This would be the first place to start your journey on course development. I would rate the margin of difficulty as moderate.
Next, it would behoove you investigate Moodle. This web site will require you to review the different ways that you can use Moodle. It will take you time to really understand the uses and benefits that Moodle can offer. You may find out that you are not ready to utilize this program; therefore another option would be to practice your course development on Brain Honey. This format could be more uses –friendly.
Learning on the Job
You could jump in and get a part time job teaching online, and develop your skills while you are teaching. The big problem with this proposal is the amount of PhD’s that are looking for teaching positions. If you don’t have the specific credentials, your chances are going to be limited.
So now What!
Create your own niche by researching, learning, and analyzing your specific interests in online courses. If this is your passion, then you will be more likely to succeed. Ask specific questions that identify your concerns and your interests.

Voice Thread for Online Education

I have been using hotspot from Verizon for my internet access, while I am waiting for my AT and T service to be installed. Yes, I am attached to the internet and many other techno devices that come down the line. I am at their mercy when it comes to hurry up and wait. But don’t worry; there are many devices and social networks that can give you a warm fuzzy feeling. Yes, in terms of social networks, your wish can be granted in one easy log in. For my needs, there are only a few social networks that are worth the time or energy when it comes to online education.
What about the techno programs for online education? Which one gives you a warm fuzzy feeling? For me, voice thread is a unique format for giving presentations that conform to your time table. Webinars don’t have asynchronous commentaries. You have to be at that webinar in order to make comments or ask questions. With voice thread you can send invitations, keep it private or public, and have your participants comment at anytime, and ask as many questions that are necessary for their training needs. I like this format because voice thread sends you an email when someone comments on your presentation.
I am currently uploading a few presentations that will be sent out to previous respondents that requested information for creating an online course. Check out voicethread.com and register for free. If you want to be included in my private voice thread presentations, then please send me an email at craig@mydestinationtrainer.com
What is your favorite techno program?
Have you ever created an online course?
Do you have any tips or suggestions that would help teachers create an online course.

Developing your Online Course

This will be a follow-up to my previous forum news letter that talked about teachers and online education. As previously mentioned, teachers need to embrace the technology that is involved in online education. They need to look at it as a helping tool rather than a detriment to their productivity and creativity in the classroom. The first step that they should take is to decide on what subject area they want to work on before they start adding material to the LMS format.
The first file that I would start to develop is called the technology toolbox. Within this file you are gathering information for your online course that can be utilized as you are developing the specific information within your course. In other words it should already be in a file that you can click on to and add to your course. For example, you should be thinking about things that you can add to your videos, discussions, wikis, blogs, content, general information and the syllabus. There are specific areas that will need content information. They are the following:
·         Introduction
·         Syllabus
·         Course Content
The introduction is going to describe the course, some of the learning outcomes, and the approximate length of time. The syllabus should be a skill that most teachers are familiar with. It has to be placed within the content of the online course. The course content will involve the number of units and subunits associated with that particular course.
I have been working on a course for environmental science for course sites.com. Within my introduction I give a brief explanation of the total scope of the course. I usually use a standard syllabus from other areas that I have used in that particular course. The course content in my opinion should be the exact titles of the units that you have used from other textbooks. The subunits should be listed under each unit. These three areas are the most important ones that you will have to work before you start on any other areas of the course development.
So let us go over what we would place in the technology toolbox thus far.
·         A comprehensive introduction
·         A standard syllabus
·         Course content that shows all of the units and subunits contained in the course
The next stage would be to identify videos that pertain to each unit within your course content. Your sources for this information can be you tube, discovery education, slide share, and other sources, such as Houghton, Mifflin and Harcourt. Textbook publishers have a wide variety of videos for all subject areas. After selecting your videos, you will need to develop a set of discussion questions that pertain to each subunit. Most LMS programs have an area where you can insert the discussion questions for that topic.

The next topic will pertain to LMS programs that are easy to use within the online education format. Please send me an email with the name of the LMS program that you are working with. Is anyone using Angel, Blackboard or Moodle?
