As you know the format for tutoring is to travel to the clients house with your materials, tutor the student for 1-2 hours and then set up another appointment. Next, you would leave the clients house and return on another day.
I don't like this format. How would you like to sit at home, turn on the computer, tutor your student and shut down after an hour. Or, sit at home, tutor 10 students online, make $450 dollars in an hour, and then make another appointment. Do you like this idea? I knew you would. Any questions?
Being an online digital educator for 10 years now, I decided to begin dabbling in online tutoring, about 6 weeks or so ago. There are many companies that "attempt" to provide this service, but the question truly is, which online tutoring service will come out on top? In order to be the best in the online tutoring world, you not only have to have slick, easy to use technology, but also readily available certified teachers who have online teaching experience with the ability to help new tutoring clients use and acclimate to the technical tools that act as the medium for learning. Tutoring online is not only convenient for the tutor, but easy and convenient for parents/students. I do teach online, everyday, and utilize VOIP, webcam, whiteboard, etc., tools to teach and interact with a group of students. But this is teaching; not tutoring. You cannot really truly call it tutoring if you are working with 10 kids at a time. And the pay, well, I think if you're in this business for the money, you are in the wrong business. Don't get me wrong, it is a nice steady supplemental income; however, I can not imagine tutoring 10 students at a time and meeting each of their individual needs. At my online school, I work with groups of students, yes. However, for those who need extra remediation, we meet separately and work 1-to-1. When tutoring online, I do have the control to set my own hours of availability and my own price point, but come on....$450 an hour? That's called robbing the parents blind. I set a reasonable rate, and I care about each child and work to meet each individual need. With all of that said, I feel I have found the company that does all of what I mentioned above, and I am excited to be a part of their tutoring staff at TutorCloud.com
